As we move into December, I’ve been thinking a lot about the idea of preparation. At church last weekend, the Pastor spoke about Advent being a time of preparing our hearts, our homes, and our lives for what’s ahead. And it struck me: regardless of your religious beliefs, there’s a deeper truth there—especially for those of us in our 60s and beyond.
In October, I wrote about a Critical Documents checklist. I wrote that blog because we were getting my uncle’s documents in order. He moved to Illinois from Massachusetts. The laws in Illinois are different, and we needed to update his documents, or his estate could end up in probate court.
Additionally, my husband and I have been going through this process ourselves. When we became Florida residents in 2024, we learned that our existing documents needed to be updated to match Florida’s requirements. There are real benefits to getting everything in order — and we don’t want to miss any important protections.
Why “Preparation” Matters More in Our 60s
As we get older, life can change quickly. We’ve all seen friends and family navigate medical issues, unexpected emergencies, and end-of-life decisions… sometimes without a roadmap. Many of us think we’re prepared, or we will update our documents next year. Don’t be caught off guard. Maybe some of these eye-opening statistics will get your attention:
- 83% of adults do not have an end-of-life plan.
- 52% of adult children have no idea where their parents store their legal or financial documents.
- There are approximately $1 Billion dollars of unclaimed life insurance payouts.
- Many trusts, powers of attorney, and wills become outdated or invalid simply because life changes and we forget to update them.
- $1.6 Trillion dollars of lost retirement monies that could be inherited.
The Documents You Should Have in Place After 60
Here’s a simple checklist you can review before the year ends:
✔️ A Current Trust or Will
Updated within the last 5 years—and aligned with your current state of residence.
✔️ Power of Attorney (POA)
So someone you trust can act on your behalf if needed.
✔️ Healthcare Power of Attorney
Critical for medical decision-making.
✔️ Living Will / Advance Directive
To clarify your wishes and reduce stress on loved ones.
✔️ Financial & Digital Access Information
Because passwords, online accounts, and financial portals are now part of your estate.
✔️ A Central, Accessible, Safe Place to Store Everything
This is the part so many families struggle with.
In addition to the big legal documents—your trust, living will, and powers of attorney—there are the personal things that matter just as much. The photos no one else has. The family recipes that only live in your head. The stories, notes, and bits of wisdom you want your family to remember.
These pieces of your life are just as valuable to pass down, and making sure they’re organized and easy for your loved ones to find can make all the difference for future generations..

I partnered with DocuGuardian because it solves a real problem for families. Oh, you can get the NokBox but if there is a disaster such as a flood, fire or loss of the box – that won’t help you at all. My financial advisor gave me a link to another document aggregator, but it was extremely cumbersome and not intuitive like DocuGuardian. That is why I am recommending it!
Give Your Family Peace of Mind by Being Prepared
December is a great time to finalize those year-end tasks. And getting your affairs in order is one of the most meaningful gifts you can give your family. It removes guesswork, eliminates stress, and ensures your wishes are honored.
And for you?
It brings peace, clarity, and confidence heading into the new year.
You don’t need to fix everything at once.
Just choose one step to start with:
- Review your will
- Update your POA
- Scan and upload your documents
- Create a family “in case of emergency” file
- Put at bank passwords in a safe place
- And…make sure your loved ones know where things are
Small steps add up. So, don’t delay…do it today!
