Savoring Summer at 60

A straw hat rests on a wooden deck beside a sparkling blue swimming pool, perfect for summer relaxation.

There’s something magical about summer—especially when you finally have the freedom to experience it at your own pace.

After decades packed with summer camps, office deadlines, and quick vacations squeezed between responsibilities, this chapter of life offers something sweeter (hopefully): time. Whether you’re newly retired, semi-retired, or just slowing down a bit, here are a few ways to truly savor the slow summer days after 60.

Making Peace with Doing Less

If you are like me, I find it very hard to slow down. Letting go of the need to be constantly productive is very hard. I can even find myself a little blue when this happens. I have to remind myself – You Don’t Have to Fill Every Moment! In fact, some of the most fulfilling days may be the ones where you linger over coffee, flip through a favorite book, or sit quietly in the sun. Some of the most reflective moments come from having the time to just sit and think. Here are some of the benefits of doing less:

  • Resting and recharging – sometimes you don’t realize how tired you are until you actually take the time to do less (naps are good!)
  • Less Stress – doing less allows you to be more intentional about the things you are doing and get out of the multi-tasking mindset.
  • Self-Reflection and Personal Growth – maybe you have been trying to figure out how to design your life for the next 3, 5 or 10 years. Doing less may allow you to have the time to figure things out.
  • Healthier Lifestyle Choices – I know when I am super busy, I stress eat. Slowing down allows us to make better eating choices and maybe even eat a little less.
  • Better Relationships – having the time to meet a friend for coffee and just sit and talk. This can be a great way to strengthen friendships and really spend time listening.

Reconnect with Nature

In the blog post, Aging and Spirituality, connecting with nature can help you build that spiritual muscle. Start your morning with a gentle walk and let your senses take the lead. Notice the scent of fresh grass, the chirping of birds, the color of the sky. Luckily, I have an older dog that likes to take relaxed, slow walks in the morning. I enjoy this time in the morning for reflection and to find peace in nature.

Try this: Take a photo of something beautiful each day, or keep a simple journal noting what you see, hear, and feel. Nature has a way of reminding us to be present. Do you find a higher power speaking to you?

Bring Back the Joys of Childhood Summers

Remember when you were a kid and summer days seemed endless. You might have spent time with your best friend laying in the grass cloud watching. Or chasing the ice cream truck for a mid-day treat. What made summer magical when you were young?

Recreate a few of those memories in your own way:

  • Weekly ice cream outings
  • Stargazing in the backyard or catching fireflies
  • Bubble playtime with grandkids (a personal favorite!)
  • Listening to music from your youth
  • Start a themed summer book series—I’m making this a Harry Potter Summer and reading the whole series!

Small joys can make a big difference.

Foster Simple Connection

You don’t need big parties or elaborate travel to feel connected. Some of the best summer memories are made in small moments:

  • Invite a friend for walk to catch up
  • Call someone you haven’t talked to in a while
  • Host a “Nine & Dine”—play nine holes of golf, then share dinner
  • Read quietly on the porch with your partner, no agenda needed

The beauty of this season is that connection doesn’t have to be scheduled or fancy—it can be spontaneous and simple.

Protect Your Peace

If you’re not careful, your calendar will fill itself. Slowing down requires intentional boundaries. Leave buffer days. Say “no” more often. Let people be a little disappointed—if it means protecting your well-being.

This is your season to protect what matters. Your time, your peace, your joy.

A Slower Summer is a Wiser Summer

Slowing down isn’t missing out—it’s tuning in. After 60, you’ve earned the right to linger a little longer, to notice more deeply, to live with less noise and more meaning.

This summer, let joy find you in the quiet spaces. Soften your pace. Let the sun warm not just your skin, but your soul.
